From the individual perspective, we should recognize that the ultimate goal in this issue is that people can live long and healthy lives. However, because of freedom of action, human beings on their own are responsible for the way they live. No one can force them in a truly free society.
For those who wish to improve their lifestyles an important question is how to do so. Interest on the best diets exists and the topic has escalated in the pucblic since Banting's publications more than 150 years ago on how to eat properly. Nevertheless, according to Stanford studies on diets by Dr. Gardner, it does not matter what programs people follow, but rather to embrace a lifestyle that through simple decisions can cut the excess of fat and carbohydrates from daily meals. This decisions rely on the general will of individuals.
On the other hand, we should also consider that people are highly susciptible to the exposure and information in their social environment. Culture is a central point that influences the behavior of humanity and the decisions that people take, in all aspects of life. Diets are no exception. Here is where government can have its greater impact on nutrition. Campaignes on healthy practices, laws against excessive junk food advertisement, promotion of correct education on nutrition since childhood can improve the way people manage their diets in adulthood.
In conclusion, individuals and government actions are both important in the fight against obesity to develop a healhy society with better lifespan and quality of life. Governements should promote education in this field as well to regulate junk food. Individuals should apply their will power to incorporate appropriate lifestyles through simple decisions based on reducing the intake of fats and carbohydrates.
